Congratulations Patrick Keating!
A Cook County judge on Thursday denied a bid by the city of Chicago to throw out a proposed class-action lawsuit challenging its lucrative and embattled red light camera program, saying those ticketed deserve their day in court.
The lawsuit accuses the city of issuing more than $500 million in tickets as part of a program that did not have proper authority from state lawmakers. It also alleges the city potentially issued millions of tickets even when yellow light times at red light camera intersections were too short.

Litigators at Roberts McGivney Zagotta LLC led a team of four law firms in presenting a class action case before the Illinois Supreme Court
Litigators at Roberts McGivney Zagotta LLC led a team of four law firms in presenting a class action case before the Illinois Supreme Court, representing a class of Illinois motorists who were wrongly assessed fines by the City of Chicago under its Red Light Camera ordinance. The plaintiffs argued that Chicago's ordinance was void when enacted in 2003 because it was not authorized by state law, which requires uniformity in traffic regulations. A later-enacted state law, Public Act 94-795, did not revive Chicago's void ordinance, and also violated the state constitution's ban on the General Assembly passing local laws (the Act applied only to municipalities in eight named counties) when general laws can be made applicable.
Oral argument took place May 21st, 2014 at the historic courthouse in Ottawa, Illinois, near the site of the first Lincoln-Douglas debate. The case is Elizabeth M. Keating, et. al., v. City of Chicago, No 116054. A ruling is expected later this year.

Alliance of Mergers and Acquisitions Advisors winter conference
Michael Roberts and David Fletcher attended the Alliance of Mergers and Acquisitions Advisors winter conference in Las Vegas. One of the highlights of the conference was the discussion by Stephen Covey, Jr. relating to trust and being trustworthy in a deal. We couldn't agree more that being transparent in a deal is critical to the successful completion of a deal. Any sort of distrust in a deal nearly always results in additional negotiations, loss of momentum, increased costs and, in the worst case, loss of the entire deal. It was great seeing everyone at the conference and we hope to see you at the summer conference!
